UK says it still wants Ukraine to get German-made tanks

Britain wants to make an international agreement with Ukraine for the supply of German-made tanks. However, Germany must consent to their transfer, James Cleverly, British foreign minister, said on Sunday (22 January).

Although the West pledged billions in weapons to Ukraine last week, they were unable to convince Germany to lift its veto on the supply of Leopard battle tanks. These tanks are owned by a number of NATO countries but would need to be supplied to Ukraine by Berlin.

Defence experts consider the best choice for Ukraine to be the Leopard tanks.

Cleverly stated in an interview with Sky News that he would love to see the Ukrainians equiped with the Leopard 2 and artillery systems provided by the UK or others.

“I will continue having those conversations with NATO allies and our friends, in order to facilitate the donation to Ukraine of the finest military equipment to aid them defend themselves against this horrific invasion.”

Cleverly was asked if Germany had done enough to help Ukraine. He said that he would like to see “everybody go as far as possible, but each country will support Ukraine the way that is most suitable to them.”

U.S. Defense secretary Lloyd Austin called on allies to support Ukraine at a meeting held Friday. Officials said that no decision was made on the supply of Leopards, but pledges were made for large quantities of other weapons.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrat party has been skeptical of military involvements in the past and is wary of any further escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

A Kremlin spokesperson stated that the West would not supply additional tanks to Ukraine, and would only increase the problems of the Ukrainian people.
